HOW CAN SHAMROCK FAMILY EYE CARE HELP WITH MYOPIA CONTROL?

To help protect your child’s sight, it’s important to have annual eye exams and, when indicated, to pursue Myopia Control options.

Myopia Control can slow down progression by more than 50% and can include a combination of eyeglasses, contact lenses, and eye drops that work together to slow the progression.

Treatment options for Myopia Control can include the following:

MiSight Contact Lenses: A type of soft contact lens designed specifically for Myopia Control in children. These lenses use a unique design that helps to slow down the progression of nearsightedness by providing clear vision at all distances while also promoting healthy eye growth.

Atropine Eye Drop: Low-dose Atropine eye drops relax the eye’s focusing mechanism and have been shown to slow myopia progression in children as young as 4 years of age.

Orthokeratology (Ortho-k): Ortho-k lenses manage myopia by temporarily reshaping the cornea while your child sleeps. This helps to correct your child’s vision and reduce the need for glasses or daytime contact lenses. Ortho-k can also slow myopia progression.

IS MY CHILD AT-RISK FOR DEVELOPING MYOPIA AND/OR MYOPIA PROGRESSION?

Environmental Risk Factors

  • High amounts of near work have been shown to increase the risk of myopia development or progression.

  • Spending less than 80-120 minutes outdoors daily can also increase a child’s risk

Genetic Risk Factors

  1. If both parents are myopic, a child has a 6x higher risk of myopia development or progression

  2. If one parent is myopic, a child is 2-3 times more at risk

  3. If neither parent is myopic, a child has a lower risk of myopia development or progression, but environmental factors can still increase their risk.
